Dan “Tower” Anderson

KPA-CTP, AD-PDT

Karen Pryor Academy - Certified Training Partner, Absolute Dogs - Pro Dog Trainer

Hello, my name is Tower. Thank you for visiting my website and taking the time to get to know me. I believe in being personal and real, which is why I’m writing my own bio. You’re not looking to hire a random dog trainer, but a real person – that’s me! And yes, I’m a real person. Many website bios are written in the third person, which can feel impersonal. That’s not how I roll. In order to build a successful working relationship, it’s essential that you like the person you’re hiring.

I’ve used a variety of dog training techniques throughout my journey as a dog trainer. When I first started working with dogs back in the 90’s, aversion and correction were the norm. Although I knew about positive reinforcement and clicker training, I didn’t understand why they were effective. In fact, I thought they were silly. However, after conducting some research on the science behind these methods, my approach changed. I’m now a professionally certified clicker trainer, and my approach is all about working with the dog to achieve a goal. By making the dog a partner in the training process, we can achieve better results.

When working with any dog, my main focus is building a relationship with them. It’s important to ask yourself whether what you’re doing is helping or hurting the relationship. If it’s not helping, then it’s time to reconsider your approach. Unfortunately, the relationship is often overlooked in dog training, with most focus being placed on getting quick results. While quick results are not necessarily bad, they only focus on a specific behavior. The relationship focuses on the dog as a whole and looks to the dog's overall well-being. Building a strong relationship with your dog is the long-term goal that should drive everything you do. Ultimately, behavior all boils down to relationships, regardless of breed, energy level, or personality.

Roo Chillious Maximus CGC, TKN

Roo is my oldest dog who helps me with various training situations, particularly dog-to-dog interactions. I adopted her from the Humane Society of Truckee Tahoe in 2011 when she was only six months old. When I first met her, she was one of the most fearful and shut down dogs that I had ever encountered, and she would freeze in fear and refuse to move. It took a lot of patience and consistency for me to earn her trust and slowly bring her out of her shell. With time and care, Roo transformed into the amazing dog she is now.

Roo is now a certified therapy dog under Pet Partners, having scored perfect scores on all her tests. She is the only Karen Pryor Academy Certified Canine Graduate in the Truckee-Tahoe region and has received her AKC Canine Good Citizen (CGC) and Novice Trick Dog (TKN) Titles. She was even brought on staff as an official Truckee Police Therapy Dog, thanks to the Chief of Police's encouragement, during my tenure with the Animal Services Division of the Town of Truckee Police Department. Roo's success is a testament to the power of compassion and a loving approach.

Bagheera Pyrrha Wiggles TKA

Bagheera joined Roo's and my crew in September 2021. She is a mix of Dutch Shepherd and English Lab, born in December 2020, so she's still a young pup. Bagheera is a friendly dog and loves to socialize with other dogs and people. She gets excited easily and admittedly this can sometimes be a problem and get her in trouble.

Initially, I focused on training Bagheera to be calm since she has high energy and needs to learn how to settle down. Once she had mastered that, I worked on helping her think through her excitement when she sees other dogs and people. It's incredible how much progress she's made. Now she's even more relaxed than Roo, which is really saying something!

Bagheera has earned her AKC Advanced Trick Dog Title (TKA) and is working towards her next level. She's still a work in progress, but you can follow her journey on the Dog Pause YouTube channel, Instagram, and Facebook pages.
